The Christmas tree is the most important attribute during the holiday season. It fills our homes with coziness, anticipation, and warmth. Therefore, the Silvertree team wants to share a few tips that will help you properly care for your Christmas tree and avoid unexpected surprises such as shedding and drying out of tree needles.
How long do Christmas trees stay fresh
First of all, we need to understand that Christmas trees are living trees, so over time, they start to dry out.
The so-called Nordman Fir Christmas trees begin to develop in a room temperature environment already within the first week. Typically, Nordman Firs do not shed needles, so even as they dry out, they can continue to decorate and brighten your home. In room temperature conditions, these trees can remain green for up to 3 weeks, depending on room temperature and humidity.
Traditional Slovakian Spruce trees are more prone to shedding needles – they can start shedding as early as the first day after being brought into your home. In room temperature conditions, traditional Spruce trees can keep their needles for up to 2 weeks, depending on room temperature and humidity.
Since we work on advance reservations for Christmas trees, we recommend reserving your tree as early as possible, even if you’re not sure exactly when you want to receive it. You can always change the delivery date and time.
Every year, we sell out of our Christmas trees earlier and earlier. So it’s a good idea not to wait until the last minute, to avoid having to search for a decent-looking tree in the stores.

When to decorate the Christmas tree
Every year, there is a growing trend to decorate for Christmas earlier.
To ensure that your holiday trees maintain a satisfying appearance and “freshness” not only until Christmas but also through New Year’s, we recommend:
- Decorate Christmas trees no earlier than December 15th.
- Slovakian traditional spruce trees can be decorated even later, starting from December 20th.
However, if you want to enjoy the main festive decoration for a longer period, you can keep the trees on your balcony or terrace. Christmas trees can be stored outdoors both packaged and unpacked and decorated. In cold temperatures, trees go into a winter dormancy state, so they can maintain their original appearance for up to 3 months!
If you still want to enjoy a perfect Christmas tree indoors for an extended period at room temperature, we recommend reserving 2 trees with different delivery dates. We will deliver the first tree when requested and the second one according to your preferred delivery order.
Christmas tree care
Both fir trees and traditional spruce trees start to wake up from their winter dormancy once they get into room temperature. Therefore, it’s essential to keep them away from heat sources:
- Radiators;
- Fireplaces;
- Heated floors (place a rug or a stand under the tree).
The higher the room temperature, the faster the trees will dry out. To keep Christmas trees fresh for as long as possible, it’s advisable to reduce the normal room temperature to at least 20 degrees Celsius.
It’s also crucial to keep the trees well-watered. Depending on their size and placement (room conditions), they can absorb up to 1-2 liters of water per day. That’s why a tree stand with a water reservoir is necessary for cut trees.

Sometimes, for various reasons, the tree may not absorb water, but there’s no need to worry. Since firs are grown in a humid coastal climate, they absorb water through their needles too. For this reason, it’s recommended to use a water spray and regularly moisten your tree’s needles. This should be done 1-2 times a day.
Pot grown Christmas tree care
All of our potted Christmas trees are grown in pots. This means that they have not been uprooted or cut and simply placed in pots (such trees never survive when replanted after Christmas).
The care and storage recommendations for potted trees with roots are almost the same as for cut trees. It’s important to water them, spray the needles with water, and keep them away from heat sources. Additionally, you can place ice cubes on the soil in the pot – this will cool the tree and slow down its drying process.
To successfully replant the trees with roots in the spring, it’s not advisable to keep them at room temperature for too long. After keeping the tree indoors for five days, you should move it to a balcony or outdoor area. If necessary, after a 5 days, you can bring the tree indoors again. However, it’s crucial not to exceed a 5-day limit for keeping potted trees at room temperature.
